Battle of Stamford Bridge at Simsbury, CT

Hi all,

I was just thinking that one week from now, I’ll be at Historicon running my first game. Can’t wait !
In the mean time, we are still running plenty of library events. Today, Jim and I traveled up to Simsbury, CT to run a Dark Age game based on the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Mary Richardson, the head librarian at Simsbury is a big fan of ours, and she played in the game as well, directing the Viking team.

This group at Simsbury is much different from the kids who have played here before. Mary wanted to introduce miniature gaming to the libraries D&D group, so we played on a Wednesday when their group meets as a special event. I tweaked the rules a bit to allow for some of their D&D characters to attach themselves to a warband and act as a sort of hero. This worked out pretty well.

The first photo is of Jim and Mary planning out our next event in the Fall. It will most likely be another Aztec themed game since most libraries have to start planning some events for Hispanic History Month, and our events basically check off all their boxes. So September will be a busy month for Next Gen. I’m anticipating about 2-3 events per week.

The rest of the photos are just random shots during the game when I had a chance to take a shot. I’ll send Russ a few more in a separate email with a more detailed description of the game itself. But if you look closely, you can see that everyone picked up on the shield wall strategy right away. In the end, the Vikings pulled out a victory, which was a greatly different result from the historical outcome.

I will be in Greenwich tomorrow night for the Battle of Bunker Hill. That should be fun as well. Enjoy the photos, and I’ll send a few more of the Greenwich game soon.

Best regards,
John
