Hi all,
Since we are pretty close to the Ides of March, I thought another Roman game would be fun. It was another refight of the Battle of Watling Street during Boudica’s rebellion against Rome.
A quick shout out to one of our HMGS vendors, David Tofer, owner of Tofers Miniatures, for sending me some pretty cool Roman fortifications that I was able to use in the game. I’m pretty sure David will be at Historicon as well.
That said, the kids playing the Romans wanted nothing to do with sitting behind a wall. Completely outnumbered, they just charged out and destroyed all the Brit tribes in front of them. However, at one point a few Roman cohorts advanced too far and became cut off from the rest of the supporting cohorts.
One of the kids playing the Romans knew about the Testudo formation. I really didn’t have any rules for that, so we actually just made something up on the spot. Whether it was historical or not, I guess my point is that I was pretty impressed that they had a discussion on some new rules and how they would work in the game.
In the end, the Romans destroyed the Brits (which was the historical outcome), but it was pretty close. The cohorts in Testudo held out until the rest of the Romans hacked their way through to them.
This might be a good option for one of our kids games at Historicon.
