WW1 planes over New Canaan

Hi all,

Here are some photos from our latest gaming event on Sunday at the New Canaan Library.  We played Wings of Glory and used the balloon again like we did in Darien.  For some reason, kids just love trying to shoot down a balloon !

We had 6 kids, so there were 4 German players and 2 British.  The British were hard pressed to cover all approaches to the balloon, and eventually the Germans broke through and started dishing out damage.  The balloon was finally downed, but the British scored 5 shot down planes versus only 1 in return.

As an aside, while I was setting up, an older gentleman was walking by the room and stopped when he saw the models.  I waived for him to come in.  He just asked, “Is that a WWI observation balloon?”  I said yes, and we started talking about HMGS.  He never heard of HMGS, but he knew his history and every type of plane on the board (Albatross, DR 1, Snipe, etc…).  I told him about our conventions, gave him the website address, and that I was trying to get some adult events on the library calendar in 2025. Even tiny outreach helps. 😀

Lastly, one of the students named Lucas asked for some WWI figures to paint. I arranged to drop off some of my extra figures with the librarian for him to pick up. If he paints those, I can give him more. Once they start painting, that’s when we have them hooked !

That’s it for 2024. 37 library events including the new contacts in NJ. Plus Jim Stanton’s ongoing after school program in Stamford. Next event is in Rye, NY on January 10th. Maybe the Taylor Swift fan will show up! 😂

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season to everyone !
John
